Our Process

We’ll start by making sure you’re a good candidate. This encompasses several areas, including your gum health, amount of bone available and space available in the location that the implant is needed. Then we’ll refer you to an oral surgeon to install the implant post into your jaw.

Dr. McGowen oversees the design and fabrication of a custom crown to attach to the implant post. Once the oral surgeon has deemed your implant is ready to restore, we’ll take an impression and have our lab create a custom fabricated crown to match the shape, size and color of your teeth.

Once your crown(s) are complete, we install them and make sure that they fit properly. After we put in your final crown, you’ll be good to go!

How Implants Work

When you visit us for dental implants in New Bern, you’ll work closely with both Dr. McGowen and our oral surgeon partners. Together we’ll completely install each component of the implant.

A dental implant consists of a small metal post that is inserted into your jawbone. An oral surgeon may also need to graft additional bone material to your jaw for the post to adhere to.

After this has permanently adhered, you can return to Evolve Dentistry where we install the permanent crown to complete the implant process.

Once we’ve decided that dental implants in New Bern are right for you, each step takes some time before we can progress to the next ones. To start with, the initial bone graft may take 4 to 6 months to solidify. Following that, actually attaching the implant to the bone can take another 4 to 6 months. Bridges consist of a custom-designed synthetic tooth that perfectly fills a gap. On either end of this appliance are crowns that fit over the adjacent healthy teeth. Bridges allow you to use these areas of your mouth again. Plus, they can replace multiple adjacent missing teeth.

We can install bridges much quicker than dental implants, and they don’t require any bone grafts or metal implants. However, while bridges can last for years, they are intrinsically less durable than dental implants.

Dental implants need the most stable foundation possible to last as long as possible in your mouth. To support the implant post, we usually recommend bone grafts to strengthen your jaw and provide a solid base for your implant. Think of it like creating a strong foundation for your house-you must first pour the concrete for the foundation, let that set up and then you can begin building on top.

During a bone graft, we insert the surrogate bone material into the jaw area. This fills in the socket left by your missing tooth and bonds to your jaw over time. Once this is complete, you’ll have plenty of bone material to secure your implant.
